Our Speakers

Our services are lay-led, and sometimes our speakers are our own church member Celebrants. Other times, we bring in guest speakers to share their unique experiences and expertise. A wide range of topics are talked about, from world religions to climate change, social justice issues to peacekeeping and beyond. The only requirement is that the message somehow ties into at least one of our Seven Principles.
Come As You Are
We're a warm and welcoming community, and people of all ages and walks of life are welcome to join our Sunday services.
Dress is informal, comfortable and eclectic, so come as you are!
Services are lay-led and regularly feature news and announcements from the congregation, a chalice lighting, hymns and special music by our members and friends, readings from diverse spiritual writings from around the world, and a guest speaker whose message ties into at least one of the UCU's guiding principles.
Children remain in the church for about the first 15 minutes of the service and then are sung out to attend religious education class, held in the building next door.
After the service, there's social time with treats and conversation.
Upcoming Speakers
January 21 - Mel Duncan
The News You Don't Hear
Ordinary people are doing extraordinary nonviolent peacekeeping around the world, from South Sudan to North Minneapolis. Whether on Fox, CNN or NPR, you seldom hear about them. Having worked with these heroes for over 20 years, Mel will bring you some of their inspiring stories that provide concrete alternatives to the military madness of today.
Recently retired, Mel is the founding director of Nonviolent Peaceforce, an international organization that provides unarmed protection and supports community self-protection in places like Ukraine, Burundi, Irag and the U.S. Last October, he helped organize a gathering in Geneva of people throughout the world wo do this, to share their good practices and challenges and build a community of practice. He spends his spare time in Pelican Rapids.

Our Music
Music is central to our services.
We have many talented musicians in our membership who sing and play as featured performers, and we also bring in guest musicians to provide special music from time to time. We have three wonderful in-house pianists and a small church choir.
The congregation sings 2-3 songs at each service, usually from the "Singing the Living Tradition" Unitarian Universalist hymnal, which includes inspirational hymns and songs from many faith and non-faith backgrounds.
