Seekers of Fellowship,
Freedom and Truth
OUR MISSION: The Unitarian Church of Underwood is a welcoming community of diverse people where our celebration of life and common search for meaning bind us together.
Our Purpose
We are a fellowship of seekers after truth, bound by no dogma, restricted by no creed, following the dictates of our own conscience. Relying upon reason as our guide and freedom as our method, we seek to grow in understanding of ourselves and our neighbors, and to serve our community.
Social Justice-Minded
Social justice work is necessary to live out our Seven Principles.
No Dogma
We believe most religions have something to teach us but no one religion has all the answers.
Our Beliefs
The Seven Principles
1.
The inherent worth and dignity
of every person.
2. Justice, equity and compassion
in human relations.
3. Acceptance of one another and
encouragement to spiritual growth
in our congregations.
4. A free and responsible search
for truth and meaning.
5. The right of conscience and
the use of the democratic process within
our congregations and in society at large.
6. The goal of world community with
peace, liberty and justice for all.
7. Respect for the interdependent
web of all existence of which
we are a part.
As a Unitarian Universalist congregation,
we affirm and promote the Seven Principles,
which we hold as strong values and moral
guides. We live out these principles within
a "living tradition" of wisdom and spirituality, drawn from sources as diverse as science,
poetry, scripture, and personal experience.
Our Symbol

Conglomerate of World Religions
hangs on the wall at the front of our sanctuary. It contains symbols from several world religions.
Our History
Our roots in Underwood stretch back to 1889, and our church building has been our home since 1894.

Our Sources
We share a living tradition drawn from many sources:
~ Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and openness to the forces which create and uphold life.
~ Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion and the transforming power of love.
~ Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.
~ Jewish and Christian teachings, which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves.
~ Humanist teachings, which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
~ Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions, which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony
with the rhythms of nature.
Leadership and Government
Our church is member-led by a Board of Directors, three Operations Committees (Program, Facilities and Community Outreach), multiple other committees dedicated to church membership, communications, financial management, our Foundation and Empowerment Grants, religious education, social justice and more.
We have a fabulous little staff of two:

Unitarian Universalist Association
A flame within a chalice is the symbol of the Unitarian Universalist Association, or UUA, of which our church is a member. We open every service with a chalice lighting. This image is the current official UUA logo.
