Living Out Our Principles

Living out the Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism means putting our beliefs into practice in our own lives, as we strive to make our world a better place for everyone. We do this in many ways, both as unique individuals and as a congregation.

Empowerment Grants

Our church has received many generous donations from members over the years, and the Empowerment Grant Program was developed to share this generosity with the greater community. It also creates opportunities for our members to make a positive impact on issues they feel strongly about. Since the first year of the grant program in 2007, we have contributed over $125,000 to local, regional and international organizations through more than 90 different member-initiated projects. Empowerment Grants have benefitted nonprofit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Someplace Safe, Underwood Lions, Friends of Prairie Wetlands, Kinship, Non-Violent Peace Force, and Schools for Shan Refugees, to name just a few. Projects vary in time and scope and address a range of social and environmental issues. The annual application deadline for these grants is usually around the end of February.

   UCU Foundation

The Foundation of the Unitarian Church of Underwood (UCU Foundation) is an enduring and flexible support program that addresses current and future needs of the church while ensuring the intent of donors. Gifts to the foundation may be made by anyone, at any time, in one of several ways, including cash, stock, real estate, or through a designation in a will. Tax laws encourage charitable giving; financial advisors or estate attorneys can provide guidance.

Social, Racial and Environmental Justice

Our church members participate in all sorts of individual and group efforts related to social, racial and environmental justice. In recent years, for example, members have taken part in Nibi Water Walks, joined Line 3 protests, became members of Confronting Racism in West Central MN, conducted a book drive for prison inmates, developed a "Response to Hate" policy and process for the church, and brought in several speakers to talk about their personal experiences with white privilege, poverty, cultural appropriation and other important topics. This justice work is ongoing and members participate as they wish and are able.

You can also make an immediate, secure, tax-deductible donation to the UCU online through our Givelify account.
